Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Missouri
In march of 2009 I signed a lease for a house in Utah where I was planning to attend school. I signed a lease and sent a check for first months rent and a deposit (rent ($305=rent $200=deposit). I was not able to move because I was having financial difficulties. I contacted the landlord about a week before I was suppose to be moving into the house with five other girls who are all on seperate leases. She informed me that I was going to have to pay the rent until another tenant was found. I paid the rent for October and November but I have not been able to pay rent since then. I have contacted her a few times through email but i have recieved no response. I have no way of paying her and the lease was up in Aug of 2010. Should I contact the landlord? I am worried I will be sued for not paying the rest of the rent. What should I do?

I am not licensed to proctice law in Utah, so this answer is bsed upon missouri law. It is unlikely ttah tthe landlord will choose to cometo Misosuri to get a judgment against you, based upon the lease in Utah. She might however, seek to sue you in Utah and then register the judgment in Missouri. In that case, they could garnish your wages and execute upon your bank accounts. You might want to consult with an attorey licensd in utah. If LawGuru cannot help you, you might contact the Missouri Bar, who may be able to fidn an attorney in Missouri who is licensed in Utah. May attorneys offer a free or low cost initial consutlation., That may be all you will need.
