Service animals are protectable exceptions to no pet policies in rental property, Generally, pets are not. Your "should have pet" letter seems very vague. If landlord woudl allow you to have goldfish and you buy a dog, it would be tough for a lawyer to prevent an eviction under thos circumstances. You might need to take your letter and other information to an attorney in your area, if you need more specific advice on your case.
Good luck
