Legal Question in Personal Injury in Missouri
A friend of ours is being sued for an accident that her 26 yr old son was in. He was driving his grandfathers car, the grandfather had the insurance on the car. The people are suing her son of course but they are also suing her for all the possessions of her home which she is a renter, her car and any property that she might own. She has a deposition to go to next week. She is really scared which is why I'm trying to help her. What type of lawyer should she use to defend such a case? Thank you for any advice on this matter.

While it is impossible to fully evaluate the facts of case int eh abstract. there seems to be nothing in the facts you described that would cause the woman to have libility for her adult Son. The grandfather might, but that seems tenuous at best. I personally have never seen an AMerican suit where the plaintiff is suing for tortious libility (such as this accidnet case) and the plaitniff is seeking to get all of the defendant's assets, (i.e. house, belongins, car, etc.) such as you have described. Perhaps yoru friend has mischaracterized the suit to you.
Your friend needs a civil attorney. She needs someone that can accurately evaluate what the suit is really about. Many attorneys offer a free or low cost initial consultation. If the boy had his grandfahter's knowledge and permisison to use the car, the garnfather's insurer may pay for the attorney for the grandson. That attorney may be able to guide yrou friend.
If the Plaintiff's counsel has really filed the suit that you described, they may get in trouble with the Missouri Bar. Your friend might try seeking counsel from the Bar, or raising a Bar complaint about this suit, if it is as you say.
