First of all, real estate can not become a "ward of the state". So, your question could provide better information about your situation to begin with. Does the owner of the real estate simply allow you to live there? Is there any written lease or other agreement concerning your living there? Has the owner any family or potential heirs that might claim an interest in the real estate upon the owner's death? Does the owner have creditors (like the state of Missouri for instance) that will be able to make a claim against the real estate upon the death of the ownere? It would be helpful to know all of the facts involved before attempting to help you. generally speaking, if you have no legal interest in the real estate and plan on leaving upon the death of the owner, then you should be able to remove your personal possessions when you do so.
