Can they file a lien?

Can anyone just go file a lien against my property?

What documentation do they need to do this legally?

I am being sued in small claims court and I have all the documentation to refute this frivolous claim, but I have been told by another individual that the plaintiff has threatened to place a lien on my property (place of residence) - can they do this without any documentation?
