Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Missouri
If two people are on a deed and tax statements are only sent to one, can that person pay the taxes without notifying the other and then later claim the property is theirs because they paid the taxes on it? If so, how can the other person safeguard against this?

The person who paid the taxes may sue the others for contribution of their share. The same is true and to maintenace, improvements, and repairs. If they choose not to sue, they can get reimbursed from the proceeds of the sale of the property. If you are the nonpayor, I suggest you stay in contact witht ethe owner who is, and acknowledge your owed share in writing. This may prevent any attempt by the payor to say they became the sole owner.
Good luck
