property dispute

I just bought a home. My neighbor that lives behind me put up a fence a few years back and now claims that 4 feet of my yard on my side of the fence belongs to her. the last owner of the home maintained the property for over 2 years and I was under the impression that it was mine when I bought the property. What can I do. My thoughts is since she put up the fence she decided then the property was not hers.

The only way I know how to be sure exactly where your property lines are would be to check the survey done on each property. Didn't you have a survey done when you bought the property? If not, now would be a good time. Be sure to tell the surveyor about the fence issue. Also, if you ar e still on speaking terms with the neighbor, it may be possible to simply sit down and compare each of your surveys. At this point I do not see any need for legal action. Good luck.
