Legal Question in Traffic Law in Missouri
My 17 year old daughter received a traffic ticket for possession of marijuana. She wants to just go to court and plead guilty. But, what will happen if she does this? Should we obtain the services of a lawyer?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Your daughter would be making a huge mistake if she goes to court on her own and pleads guilty. She should definitely hire an attorney, and if this is a municipal court case, the fees will be moderate. I have handled many of these cases in the thirty three years I have been practicing law. If we can not defend the charge completely, we should be able to negotiate a plea bargain which will avoid your daughter taking a conviction. You know that she will, in all likelihood, be filling out various applications in the future. School, finanial aid, employment, loans, apartments, and the list goes on and on. Most, if not all, of those applications will have a question asking whether your daughter has ever been convicted of anything, and then, if she tells the truth she will not get whatever she is applying for, or worse, if she lies and they run a simple record check, she won't get whatever she is applying for. Perhaps even more importantly, a conviction will have devastating consequences for her is she ever gets into trouble with the law again. Don't let her make this mistake. Depending upon where the charge is pending, I might be able to help herself myuself. Please feel free to call, or have her call, for a free telephone consultation.
