Legal Question in Traffic Law in Missouri

No injuries or property damage.

What charges can be issued after leaving the scene of an accident of hitting a tree, even though there were no other cars involved, no injuries and no property damage then my car was towed and impounded even after it was safely pulled over to the side of the street, then the police took personal property out of my car - can they do that?

Re: No injuries or property damage.

Your question did not provide enough information for an attorney to be able to give you much help with it. The law enforcement authorities might decide to prosecute you for leaving the scene, causing property damage, or other things based upon the facts of the case. Did you admit driving? Were there any skid marks? What caused the accident? Why did you leave the scene? Were you with anyone else? Was there any drinking involved? All of this information would be important to know. Regarding the police taking personal property out of the car, if the police impounded the car, they have a right to do what is referred to as an inventory search. If they find contraband then there may be additional charges against you. Otherwise you should be able to get your personal items back, although in real life it is surprisingly common for some items to disappear in the process. It sounds like you might need an attorney, so if you are not already represented, you may call me anytime. Good luck.
