can you speak to another lawyer when already have one on retainer?

Yes, Just as in medicine a person is free to obtain a "second opinion", a person is free to speak with any number of attorneys. However, my personal opinion is that an attorney approached by someone who is already represented should be very careful not to risk violating our Rules of Ethics. In this situation, after discussing my approach with the client, I always contact the first attorney and advise that attorney that his client is seeking a second opinion, and I ask if the first attorney has any problem with that.
