Legal Question in Traffic Law in Missouri

Suspended License

About 2 yrs ago I was given a ticket for no proof of insurance. My very first ticket ever! I totally forgot about the ticket (honestly), and when I applied for a job-they did a background check and found that my drivers license had been suspended!!!! I had no idea-I want to take care of this matter as quickly as possible, but don't know where to even begin??? The county I recieved the ticket is Cass County, also the county in which I reside. (not sure if that makes a difference) Please help!

Re: Suspended License

First of all, this kind of thing happens all of the time. Second, I wouldn't be surprised if the court in which you were supposed to appear has issued a warrant for your arrest due to your failure to take care of the ticket. This warrant is not likely to result in police coming out to look for you, but if you are pulled over on any other ticket you may be arrested and required to post bond. Court clerks now routinely report a defendant's failure to appear to the Department of Revenue which results in a suspension. You should have received a Notice from the DOR. It would have been sent to the address on your license. What you should do is hire an attorney in Cass county. That attorney will be able to have the warrant cancelled, and get you a new court date. The clerk will send a form to the DOR so that the suspension of your license will be lifted. If you have insurance now, or even better if you had it at the time of the ticket, your attorney should be able to work out a plea bargain so that you will not have to take a conviction. It will cost you some money in attorney's fees and fines, but you will be able to get out of this mess! Good luck!
