Legal Question in Traffic Law in Missouri

unsigned ticket

There is a space at the the bottom of my ticket to sign agreeing either to pay my ticket or show in court. Is the officer required to have me sign the ticket when giving it to me?

Re: unsigned ticket

I do not believe it matters at all whether or not you sign the ticket. Usually, in Missouri, your signature is just a promise to appear. You are still required to appear or otherwise take care of the ticket by paying it or hiring an attorney whether you sign it or not. By the way, it is usually a mistake to just pay a ticket. If it is for a moving violation, paying the ticket will result in a conviction being entered on your record. The Department of Revenue will put points on your driving record, and a sufficient number of points within a certain time period will result in your license being suspended. Finally, your insurance company will eventually find out about the conviction and the points and will be free to raise your premiums or cancel you. If you are not already represented by legal counsel, I would strongly suggest that you talk to an attorney. You may call me for a free telephone consultation at 314-727-2822.
