an insurance check was issued to my deceased father's estate.
there are no back accounts open uner the deceased name. what do I do.

You will have to open some sort of probate estate. Did you father have a will? Depending on the size of the check, and any other items subject to probate, you may qualify for one of the "Small Estate" proceedings. You should likely see a lawyer.
