how long after death is a family liable for charges incurred from the deceased for nursing home stay?

Unless they somehow have agreed to pay teh nursing home bill, the family members of the deceased are not usually responsible. But, the estate of the decedent is liable for one year after the date of death, unless a probate estate is opened. In that case the creditor (nursing home) has six months after the notice of the estate to make their claim, or they lose it.
