As a surviving spouse, you may be directly liable for some of your deceased spouses medical care, if they were for life saving treatment, or you agreed to be liable. You may be indireclty liable, in that the amount you might have otherwise gotten from the estate of the decedent could be reduced by what has to be paid to the medical providers, etc.
