Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Montana

Ex-boyfriend trying to get my money!

When I ended a romantic relationship with a man, he decided that I owe him some money for some airplane tickets in Europe. He was living in England, and I went to see him. He made all of the arrangements, and I gave him my credit card to use on my share of things(I am very independant). He used it for my ticket to and from England, but not the other tickets (we also went to France and Italy). I realized during the trip that our relationship was over and ended it when I returned home. He has since been calling, emailing, and sending me bills saying that I better pay or he will take me to court. The amount he says I owe him is approximately $600. I did just receive a certified letter from him saying that if I don't respond with a payment by June 23rd, 2008, he will take me to court. Do I really owe this to him? If he had wanted me to pay at the time, I would have. Unfortunately, I have had some difficulties since and don't have the money. What should I do? I am getting tired of the harrassment!

He would not win this case. It is very doubtful he will even file. He will eventually stop harrassing you.

Re: Ex-boyfriend trying to get my money!

If he voluntarily paid for the tickets knowing that you had the means to pay your portion and he did not demand payment at the time, then he made a gift to you of the cost of your ticket. A gift is forever and cannot be taken back. You do not owe him this money under the facts you present, assuming no agreement between you to the contrary. Also, where would he sue you? In England? You are not there and the English courts cannot obtain jurisdiction over you. In Montana? Who can afford to travel from England to Montana to collect $600.00? Save further communications from him in a box, but do not read them.
