is is at all possible for a church, to somehow change its name or shut down for a certain amount of time. In order to avoid bein taken in a civil law suit? Does it have any rights?

Changing the name of an entity, including a church, cutting back or changing its activities, and/or hiding its assets will not absolve it from liability nor shield it or its human sponsors from suit. In fact, some such efforts could be classed as fraudulent, making the problem worse.

I'm a California attorney, and the answer is based upon California law, but nearly all jurisdictions would treat the situation similarly.
