Minimum payment schedule

Plumbers did unauthorized work for my mother. The bill was more than double what was verbally quoted and she can not pay it all right now. We tried to make arrangements with them and the owner was verbally abusive with me. We sent a payment and they are insisting on payment in full. Is there a minimum payment amount that would keep them from starting legal proceedings.

Since the work was unauthorized you have a perfect defense to any claim they make.
