selling to rival companies
is it legal for someone who is working on a group project to sell those ideas to a rival company?

Mere ideas, by themselves, do not legally belong to anyone. However, ideas sometimes overlap with areas of copyright, trade secrets, and confidential proprietary information. In any case, it may be a breach of fiduciary duty to the employer. You would need to present all the facts to an attorney to get a definitive answer.
