Legal Question in Business Law in Nebraska

Web Master directing traffic to competitors now that site owner terminated site/

The domain name is registered to the web master, not to the business owner. The domain name and the business name are one in the same. The web master was hired to create and maintain a web site for the business. The business owner has decided shutdown the site. Now when you visit that business owner's old site it says that the site was shut down at the owner's request and then proceeds to send customers to the competitors of the business owner. Does the web master have the legal right to do this since the mybusinessname.com name is registered to him/her instead of the business owner? It's a nightmare if so! Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
