Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Nebraska

Debt Collection

I have been sent a bill and phoned by a collection agency in my area. They are claiming I owed $1700 ''for various accounts''. I requested a print out or information specifically to what this amount is for. I have sent this request in writing twice now (saved copies as well). The agency has not sent me the information requested. How can I obtain info on what this amount is for?

Re: Debt Collection

You are entitled to debt verification documents per the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act as long as you send a written request within 30 days of the first written contact you get from this agency. The collection agency is required to give you a notice of your FDCPA rights in its first written demand. If you haven't gotten one yet, you can ask for one or just assume that you'll get one in the mail. As long as you timely make the written request (keep copy!), the collection agency can't take any further action until these documents have been provided to you. They may not be as detailed as you want, but would definitely include the creditor's name! I handle this type of work if you need any further assistance.
