How long after a plaintiff files a claim in Small Claims Court do they have to serve the papers to the defendent??

Unlike county or district court, in small claims court a hearing is set by the clerk when the plaintiff files a claim. The plaintiff has to elect at that time how the defendant will be served (by certified mail or sheriff) and pay for the service at that time. So, the plaintiff doesn't have any say in a small claims case about when the defendant gets served.
