Legal Question in Criminal Law in Nebraska

Domestic Abuse Protection Order

I and my girlfriend are both deaf. My girlfriend was diagnosed as being bipolar when she was only 16. She is now 21. Her father is a cop. I talked with her at great length, and I felt that she was not bipolar. I strongly suspect a vitamin defiency due to a diverticular intussception at the age of 4 months. Her family says that I am totally wrong and forbade me to talk to her ever again. That was in Jan. 2006. I didn't talk to her until Feb 2007, then she contacted me again. We started talking and really hit it off. She was on vitamins for 3 months. On May 12th she stopped taking vitamins b/c of her mom was in the kitchen that morning. That night she was in mania. She went to the hosp. for 2 weeks and came out all drugged up on bipolar meds and no vitamins. She wasn't ''herself'' at all. Then she and I were together for 3 days and she didnt' have her meds (her choice). Father filed for domestic abuse protection order against me, accusing me of keeping her away from her meds. Named 3 incidents, first one was the May 12th incident that I had nothing to do with (she stopped her vitamins). Second one was the 3 days. Third one was ''controlling and manipulating while in hospital'' when I had no contact. Would like advice on what I should do

Re: Domestic Abuse Protection Order

Obey the terms of the protection order and request a hearing before the court. Your chances will be better if you have an attorney represent you. If girlfriend is willing to support you with her testimony stating it was her choice and not due to your influence or coercion; you have a good chance of getting the order withdrawn. The fact that you think you know better than the doctors who are treating her will not work in your favor. In fact, unless she were your wife, it is none of your business. Father may be exerting a little too much influence here, unless he remains her legal guardian, but he will have support of the doctors and the court will be more inclined to be on his side.
