Legal Question in Criminal Law in Nebraska

Statutory rape?!?!

I am dating a girl who is 17, soon to be 18. I am 29

years old. Her mother just found out about the

relationship. She has contacted a lawyer and says that

she is going to press charges. My first question is,

what is the age of consent in Nebraska? Can I be

charged with a crime with we have NEVER had sex? I

need to add that I am also her boss at work. Does that

put me in a position of authority which makes it illegal?

I know I will be fired if my employer finds out but I am

curious of my legal rights.

Re: Statutory rape?!?!

Nebraska's age for consent is 16 for sexual consent. It is possible to be charged with other offenses for sexual contact with a minor. An example from Nebraska included a case where an adult had consensual sexual intercourse with a young woman over the age of consent, but did so while the young woman had left her home without her parents consent and was violating a local curfew ordinance. The adult was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. You may face similar charges if you have encouraged or facilitated her in delinquency. The definitions for this are fuzzy, and so a precise answer is very difficult without going into details about the facts that are inappropriate to a public bulletin board. You may also have civil liability as her supervisor or employer. Talk to an attorney immediately, and say nothing to anyone else about this without consulting with her/him first, this includes talking to the young woman. This will only get worse without effective legal advice, don't wait, and don't give out any information to anyone about this until you have legal advice and representation.

I can't stress this enough, be quiet and find a lawyer fast. If questioned by the mother, the police or anyone else, say that you have nothing to say without speaking with your lawyer first. The money spent on advice now could save you a great deal of heartache, expense and embarassment in the future.
