Legal Question in Family Law in Nebraska
hyphenated name change
When I was married four years ago I hyphenated my name, now I would like to drop my maiden name and have my married name as my last name. How do I go about making these changes, do I need a petition and where do I start?

Re: hyphenated name change
In order to change your name in Nebraska, it is necessary to file a Petition for Change of Name in the District Court of your county. You have to have a Notice of your Petition for name change published for 4 consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation in your county. After that, there is a hearing, where the judge must satisfy him/herself that there is good cause to change the name, and if so, an order changing your name will be entered.
Although there are a few hoops you have to jump through, it is a pretty easy process. Feel free to call me at 402-319-4639 if you would like more info or a cost/fee estimate.
