Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Nebraska

Is it legal to watch a movie with a group of friends, between 5 and 30, in my dorm's "theater" (a common place with a screen and a projector)? Thanks!

I can't think of any case in which watching a movie can be illegal - at least not in the United States. The question is whether the movie was performed publicly without the consent ot the copyright holder. So, if the movie is no longer under copyright, no consent is needed. If it is still under copyright, you may perform it privately without anyone's permission, but if you perform it publicly, you need permission.

Section 101 of the Copyright Act defines performing a work "publicly" (in the part relevant to your question), as "to perform or display it at a place open to the public or at any place where a substantial number of persons outside of a normal circle of a family and its social acquaintances is gathered". So, if you don't meet that condition, you are in great shape.
