Legal Question in Employment Law in Nebraska

References

As a manager, I was told I am not allowed to give a reference for a staff member I supervised. If a reference is given ''there will be severe consiquences.''

Is this legal?

Re: References

Many companies have a "no reference" policy, which keeps them from getting sued for slander etc. and ensures that equal treatment is given all former employees. They usually will confirm only dates of employment and position title.

They have a right to discipline (including firing) an employee that violates the policy, but the good news is they won't give you a bad reference!
