Legal Question in Employment Law in Nebraska
Rules applying to personal life outside a workplace
Is it legal to make rules for employees outside the work area?
An example of a rule is as follows: Policy to Be Aware Of: Non-Fraternization Policy Staff is prohibited from any association with students outside of the studio except for scheduled studio events. A breach of this rule is grounds for the immediate termination of the staff member's employment and will be rigidly enforced.
this is an actual policy! Do they have a right to tell people this? What if they bring their friends in for dance lessons, now they can't associate with them? Is this really legal????

Yes. The policy is legal. It is designed to prevent lost business by maintaining a professional distance between students and instructors. If you would like to recruit your friends to become studenst, get a release, in writing, from your employer.
