If a car was defective, missing a vital part of the car, and there was an accident, could the passenger (non owner) of the car sue for damages in addition to the driver?

A passenger in the car who was injured could bring a products liability case against the manufacturer since the passenger was injured by the defective product. Please contact me with further questions.
