Breach of Contract involving sign on bonus

I accepted a job with a company who, as an incentive, gave me a sign on bonus. Once the bonus was recieved and spent they approached me and declered the bonus to be recouped since they determined afterhand that I was not eligible. The contract has been voided due to them not complying with the terms. What are my rights about the bonus since it wasn't an advance? Can they legally hold me liable for the sign on bonus?
