Do I have a legal right to have a past client stop making false accusations of work I performed for him?

Mr. Smith misread your statement as you are talking about a client rather than an employer. Because of the first amendment it is hard to get an injunction but injunctions are issued often and it really depends on the case.

Unfortunately a former employer has a privilege to tell a new employer about your job performace and this is privileged from defamation. However, if you can prove the allegations are false you can probably get a preliminary injunction.
