Was the original estimate for work in writing? If so, and there have not been change orders signed by you, wave it under his nose and explain that you are holding him to his contract. If he continues to threaten you, let him know you will not hesitate to report him to the Board of Contractors, and let THEM decide if you owe him more money.

On the other hand, if you altered the work order in any way, demanded extra services or higher grade materials, or put a push for time on the job that cost the contractor more money, any of those things should have been put into a writing to provide evidence of the higher price. If you signed anything other than the original contract, you should revisit that document and see if you are on the hook for more.
