Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Nevada
Debts incurred while living together
My ex-boyfriend recently moved out. In the 7 months we were living together, we incurred about $8000 in credit cards bills (in my name) and also I bought a mini-van for him to use (his was repo'd). He will not tell me where he is living and his job requires him to be on the road so I can't track him down. My credit is getting ruined. I can't sell the van because I owe way more than it is worth. I have a letter he wrote that says ''I'm glad your credit is good so we can have things'' and ''Do I have to figure out a way to buy a vehicle on my own''. However, he didn't sign the letter. He makes a lot more money than I do. When he left he took the hot tub, $4,500, that I bought with my income tax check. The charge is on the credit card receipt but the receipt for the hot tub itself is in his name because he picked it up. I am a single mom and just enough income to get by. There's no way to pay these without his help. Is there ANYTHING I can do? I have been told that it may be a contract dispute since he said he would help, but there's nothing in writing. Would this case be possible to do on my own and win? What about a mediator? Where do I need to start if I have a chance of collecting some money from him?

Re: Debts incurred while living together
Good afternoon:
The Nevada Legislature has developed a great basic research
site covering all of the statutes and administrative regulations,
including references to Nevada Supreme Court decisions related
thereto, available at:
http://www.leg.state.nv.us
You may want to look into the chapters on ENFORCEMENT OF JUDGMENTS
on this site. In this regard, I invite your attention to NRS Chapter 21,
which is found at:
http://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-021.html
What would preclude your ex from claiming his property as exempt and/or seeking bankruptcy relief? A lawyer you hire might be able to ansswer those questions.
There may be other laws affecting your ability to resolve a debt collection problem,
which is necessarily beyond the scope of this reply.
I charge $200.00 per hour for consultation, document review, case
analysis, advice, suggesting and recommending alternatives, legal drafting, telephone calls,
legal research and prosecuting or defending debt collection actions when a client hires me.
The Nevada State Bar provides this general information online
regarding lawyer fees:

If I do not hear back from you by Friday, July 6, 2001, I will assume
that you have answered your questions to your own satisfaction,
hired another lawyer, or decided against pursuing the matter.
I hope this is of assistance to you.
