Is there any legal protection for mentally ill people that get them selves into credit card debt?

It depends. If the debt was incurred while this person was mentally ill and the creditor had reason to know the person was mentally ill than the debt might be invalid, or to put it simply he/she would not have to repay this debt. To establish that the creditor knew or should have known the person was mentally ill is very difficult.
If the mentally ill person is unable to establish that the creditor knew he/she was mentally ill, he/she has other options, including, debt settlement or bankruptcy. Each case is different based on the facts.
