Refund deposit

In 2007 I gave a $1000.00 deposit on a used machine, the balance due was $4000.00, as a down payment on a $9000.00 total price.

I did not pay the balance and company that I was going to do business with sold the machine to another party. When I asked for a return of the $1000.00 deposit I was told that they wont return the money, because I renegged on the deal. Am I intitled to a refund or not. Abe

Depends on what the document says. They might keep it if they clause in the contract that would label that money damages for breach.
