i thought that before a law officer could say anything that would hurt you in a court of law they were suppose to read you your rights. i was told no that i volunteerd to talk to them.

The Miranda rights means that the officer cannot use your confession or admission against you unless your rights have been read to you. However, the officer may testify to what he observed or to other facts of his investigation and he does not have had to read you your rights to do that.
