Probable cause to break into an apt.

Can police break into an apt. when there was a call from another apt. that there was a domestic disturbance. The police arrive and hear nothing but see a light on in the apt. They knock and get no response and later break the door down. Is this legal?

Probable cause would allow the police to break down the door in a domestic violence case if the police reasonably believed that imminent bodily harm to the victim existed based on evidence provided to the police from dispatch and other sources.
