Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

I am 17 and pregnant. I am also unemployed. Because of these factors, my mother and I are seeking insurance for my child through HER employer. The insurance carrier that her employer is contracted with is Blue Cross Blue Sheild of Tennesse.

In order to establish insurance coverage the company requires a conservatorship. I am aware that in normal cases a conservatorship allows a person to dictate the financial and legal affairs of another. This is generally used in cases where the person whos financial affairs ar handled by the other, has some sort of mental illness or disability making them unable to care for their own legal and financial affairs.

We want to purse conservatorship as quickly as possible. How do we do so?

In Nevada, it is called legal guardianship. You would file a Petition to have your mother appointed as the guardian of the person of her grandchild. Your mother would then have the legal right to make decisions concerning your child--health, education and welfare.

If you wish to retain an attorney, please contact me.

Otherwise, please review the guardianship information on the Clark County Family Court Self Help Center website.

The law on Guardians will significantly change on October 1st so you may want to file before then. The Guardian will have to pay to be investigated, be fingerprinted and entered into a data base and sign an acknowledgment of her duties in addition to taking a class on how to be a guardian.
