Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada
Arrears/Settlement
Child support originated in Nevada, moved to Texas for two years. Now live in California for almost a year and want to know what to do because I can't get a response from the Nevada or Texas child support offices regarding a settlement offer for the arrears. My child is 18 and hasn't lived with the x spouse for over a year. The arrears have been trumped up because of ambiguous orders and a variety of court mess. My balance now is around 6000.00 which I do not owe and never did. I have accurate records and have sent several letter to Texas and Nevada to try and settle for 2000.00 of which I would like to give it to my daughter so she can get her a car. My child support has been 100.00 per month and 50.00 in arrears of which since she turned 18 in September last year I have been sending 50.00 per month which is the arrears. I can't get a response what will happen if I just quit paying the 50.00 per month. I do not want to keep paying 50.00 per month for the next 10 years if you know what I mean. I would like to get this off the books with the courts and have a satisfaction of judgement filed with the courts so they won't try and get my tax money if I have a refund this year. Please advise. What happens if I just quit paying?

Re: Arrears/Settlement
Stopping payments could result in your being put in jail under either state law or federal law, regarding non payment of child support. You may be able to negotiate a settlement with Nevada, or the state in which the AFDC was received. If the support arrears are owed to mother she may be willing to forgive them if you provide help with the colleged expenses.
