Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

Am I a bigamist?

In 1980 I separated from my first husband of 2 years. He showed me some court papers I assumed were real and told me we were divorced. I remarried my current husband in 1982 in Reno, Nevada (Washoe County). We had no trouble with obtaining the marriage license.

My first husband has gotten in contact with another family member and said we were never really divorced. I did a search in all of Nevada and in California (Alameda County) which is the last known address I had for him, and no divorce was ever filed for at all. Where should I go from here? I need to have this taken care of and do not want to be a ''bigamist''! My first husband and I had a daughter and she is now 24 years old, so children would not be an issue, and neither would any property be involved. Thank you.

Re: Am I a bigamist?

Divorce your first husband. Annul your second marriage. Then get married after your divorce and annulment.
