Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada
My boyfriend is ordered to pay alimony of 1400 per month. at the time they ordered him to pay it the circumstances were a lot different . his ex-wife is now living with a boyfriend that pays half the bills. My boyfriend Was living with his mother at the time and didn't have any bills to pay but now he and I are moving in together and now he will have to pay half the bills. He also paid off 50,000 in credit card debt of hers that was ordered he also gave her $112,000 from his 401(k). My question is if he quits paying her alimony altogether and does not follow through with the three years legally what can they do to him?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Absent a court order adjusting or eliminating your boyfriend's alimony obligation, if he stops paying he can be held in contempt, which could mean fines, an obligation to pay attorney's fees, or even jail. I would suggest that your boyfriend call an attorney and set an appointment to see if he has adequate grounds to move for modification, but by all means he needs to continue making his court ordered payments.
