To get custody you need to file a Petition, a Complaint and/or a Motion.

You don't state the current circumstances, so it is a little hard to answer this question. If you were married and you and your spouse are competing for custody then you need to file a divorce complaint and a motion with the court asking for custody. If you were never married and had a child you need to file a Petition with the court and a motion.
