Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

divorce attorney

Seven months into my divorce proceeding, my attorney raised her hourly rate by $20 per hour. I hired her nine months ago and I am still not divorce. (contested, ex-husband is abusive alcholic.) She only recently sent me the client/attorney agreement that I was supposed to sign upon hiring her but she neglected to give me. Tlhe current contract has her new rate of $295 per hour on it. I have only seen her two times and the charges to date exceed $8,000! Should I sign it-is it normal to raise rates in the end of a case?

Re: divorce attorney

Your attorney should give you a copy of the retainer agreement when you sign it at the beginning of your case. If you have an original signed fee agreement, your attorney may not arbitrarily raise her hourly rate.

You have the right to file a complaint with the Nevada State Bar if you so choose. Their website is www.nvbar.org

Additionally, it seems the hourly rate you are paying is outrageous.

My firm offers hourly rates @ $125/hr. We also offer payment plans and accept credit cards.

If you are looking to switch attorneys, feel free to contact my office and I can schedule a free consultation to evaluate your situation.

Best Regards,
