Giving a ring to a girlfriend

I have been dating this girl for 3 years and this year for Christmas I plan to give her not an engagement ring but more like an I love you ring. Now if i give this ring to my girlfriend does it mean that I am engaged to her? Can I give a ring to my girlfriend just to show her that I love her, but not for engagement commitment.

In order to be engaged you have to ask your girlfriend to marry you. For further information on this subject talk to your mother, religious leader or your girlfriend.
