Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

Can a mother-in-law do this?

I have a friend who is going through a divorce, and her mother-in-law is now threatening to sue her for money that she gave to her husband and her to assist with the wedding. The mother-in-law also wants my friends wedding ring because she gave her son the money to pay for it. However, the mother-in-law does not want to include her son in the lawsuit. My question is, can she do this? I know that she could attempt to sue them for losses from the loan, but can she sue only one of them since they were married and she gave it to both of them? Thank you for your help

Re: Can a mother-in-law do this?

Yes she can and your friend can sue her husband in the same lawsuit. Additionally, if there is no written agreement to pay her back, then there is a 4 year statute of limitations and six years if there was a written agreement.

Your friend has an absolute right to keep the wedding ring as it was from her husband as an irrevocable gift.

Your friend should also get the divorce judge to assign the mother-in-law loan to the husband so even if she gets sued, the son/husband will have to pay.
