If the courts eyes pertaining to child custody, does renting a room from a family member or friend show less stability than renting an apartment or house by yourself?

Not necessarily. It depends on the quality of the accomodations and whether the roommate is stable and respectable. Best interest of the child is the main consideration.

The court wants to make sure that the child has proper accommodations usually that means a room and a bed. If you rent a room, where will the child sleep, does the child have his/her own room, own room/bed etc. Who are the roommates? Are they going to be partying while your child is visiting etc...
