Legal Question in Family Law in Nevada

Separate from significant other

I am in Las Vegas. I have been dating a man for five years. I have not lived with him the entire time. I was away for several years total. Now I am back and it is not going to work out. He lured me back with promise and nothing is going according to plans. I feel trapped now. I want to know what my rights are. He makes verbal assumptions and runs with it like it is a contract. It that legal? Can I get compensation for the time and money I have wasted in this dead end relationship? Are the debts he accumulated part of my responsibility if I was not included on the decision to accumulate them?

Re: Separate from significant other

Nevada is not a common law state so you have no rights. The verbal contract would be a he said she said. The good news is you have no responsibility for his debt. The bad news is you cannot get compensation or alimony. If you two bought property together the Court may find that you have a joint venture and divide such property. This is based on the expectations of the parties, the duration and purpose of the relationship.
