Legal Question in International Law in Nevada
Free Lotto Promotion Program
My son received a letter with a $3300 check in the mail stating that he won the lottery in the 3rd prize catagory for a total cash prize of $9,750,140 that will be shared among all international winners of that catagory.
They sent us the check to cash so we could turn around and pay it back to them for the taxes on our share of the winnings ($39,560) at which time agents from their local Las Vegas office will present my son with a new check for $36,260.
The company is called HKJC (Hong Kong Jockey Club) Lotteries Limited that is on the letterhead and the phone number I called was in Calgary, AB.
The letter came via regular mail. Our bank put a 5 day hold on the $3300 check. When they release the hold, if we pay this company with our own money and for whatever reason that check ends up coming back to the bank as FRAUD-- are we liable and do we have to pay it back? How do we find out if this is real or not? I have a copy of the letter and the check I can email you if you like.

This is a scam; don't do it.
