Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Nevada

Escrow Co. pays off wrong mortgage and ruins credit

We recently sold our home for a lowered price a few days before foreclosure in one of the best real estate markets in the US.

We went through all the normal closing proocedures with our real estate agent and escrow company guiding us.

We closed on a friday. When we went to finance a car we found errors on our credit report. While researching the question with various people we found that the wrong mortgage was scheduled for payoff. We promptly notified the escrow company of their error and asked that they straighten the credit mess. It took them another two days to find and acknowledge their error. They immediately began to demanding 7000$ stating that we were unjustly enriched by their error and threatened legal action. They refused to straighten up our credit and have even went so far as to harass us by calling cell phones etc. being rude at very in-convenient times and places.

There are more circumstances, observations and plenty of evidence to raise questions about every step of this transaction.

What are the possible remedies and what amount of money should be asked?

Should we bother trying to negotiate with the escrow company or just find a good lawyer?

What is the possible time frame?
