can estate funds be expended to defend an administrator's private interests against and interested party's claim of fraud and theft of estate assets?

As a general rule claims against the appointed administrator will be defended at the expense of the estate. The remedy may be to file a motion seeking to have the administrator disqualified although the court will typically consider that the person seeking this remedy has a heavy burden.
